As we are called The Restricted View, we feel it is important to give just that – an opinion from the outside looking in that is ever so slightly obscured! Bromley are leading the League Two title race and closing in on promotion, yet Andy Woodman’s side continue to go under the radar. Despite sitting five points clear, much of the attention remains on the ‘best team in the league’, MK Dons.
Colchester United boss Danny Cowley made that claim, clearly forgetting about a side he used to manage, after MK Dons beat his side last Wednesday to close the gap on the leaders, Bromley, to just two points.
Best Team In The League, But Not Top
That lead, however, is now five points following results at the weekend, with Woodman’s side beating Cowley’s Colchester, with the team talk honing in on Cowley’s comments, no doubt, and Paul Warne’s side suffering defeat at home to Barnet. That loss sees the best side in the division just two points above third-place Cambridge United and just four ahead of fourth-place Notts County, with both sides having a game in hand.
Andy Woodman Driving Bromley’s Promotion Charge
Bromley boss Andy Woodman is a former goalkeeper who is perhaps best known for his stint with Northampton Town in the mid-1990s. He has been in charge at the Copperjax Community Stadium since March 2021, overseeing over 250 matches and guiding the club to the Football League for the very first time.
Following the conclusion of his playing career, Woodman initially embarked on a goalkeeper coaching career, enjoying stints at Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Arsenal, to name a few, before being the top man at Whitehawk and then on to Bromley.
Two top-seven finishes were followed by a third-place finish and a successful playoff campaign to secure League status. Any thoughts of the club struggling among the 92 were laid to rest with a comfortable top-half finish last season before leading the way with just seven games to go this term.
Despite being 21 games unbeaten, Woodman has challenged his side to give even more as they head firmly into the final straight in search of a historic promotion to League One.
Key Players Behind Bromley’s Success
One thing And Woodman can call upon in this League Two title race is experience and, more importantly, experienced quality.
Up front, as we have come to expect, Michael Cheek leads the way with 16 goals from his 35 outings, adding to the 25 league goals he scored last term and the nearly 150 he has notched up in Bromley colours. He shows no signs of slowing down in terms of his goalscoring so who would bet against him, even at 35 years old by the time the new season starts, to continue finding the net in League One?
At the back, the experienced defender Omar Sowumni was picked up from relegated Sutton United and has played a key role in a defence that has kept three consecutive clean sheets and has conceded just 36 times so far.
Bromley’s rise to the top of League Two is no fluke. With a strong squad and a 21-game unbeaten run, Andy Woodman’s side are proving they deserve to be favourites for the League Two title.
