Lincoln City took a huge step towards promotion from League Two with a brilliant 2-0 win over MK Dons at Stadium MK.
The Imps went on to win the League Two title by six points from Bury and their opponents on this day seven years ago.
Lincoln City Secure Vital Three Points
April 6th 2026, sees Lincoln City head to Reading in search of a 24th League One match without defeat on the hunt for the club’s first third-tier title.
Seven years ago, the Imps were on the verge of embarking on their League One journey as they closed in on the 2018-19 League Two title.
The Imps travelled to Milton Keynes with the hosts looking to close the gap at the top to five points after the Imps had dropped points at home to Macclesfield, and they had managed a late win at Forest Green Rovers in the previous round of fixtures.
John Akinde, almost faultless from the penalty spot, gave City the lead just after half an hour, after Shay McCartan was felled in the box.
MK Dons lined up with two future City players in their starting 11, with Joe Walsh at centre back and a member of the current squad, Conor McGrandles, in midfield. How the hosts will regret his departure as he is set to be a Championship player next season.
Former Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper Matt Gilks had proved to be an inspired short-term signing by Danny Cowley, joining the club when Josh Vickers was injured, and Grant Smith found the going a little tough.
Gilks joined from Scunthorpe United and added yet another experienced voice to the back line that already contained Jason Shackell and Michael Bostwick.
His qualities were called into action late in the game when he made a magnificent save from a close-range header. Almost immediately, the Imps broke, and Bruno Andrade secured the points with a left-footed strike.
The away end was pandemonium, and Lincoln were out of sight at the top of League Two. In truth, Cowley’s side limped over the line as they were so comfortable and had enough points for promotion after just 39 games.
In the five games after MK Dons, Lincoln failed to win and picked up only two more points, but still finished six points clear of the rest.
